Since October last year, traveling to the USA has become significantly more expensive. At the time, we reported on the drastic increase in fees for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) and the introduction of the Visa Integrity Fee for longer stays. In the future, traveling to the USA could not only become more expensive, but also quite uncomfortable.

The reason for this is plans to include social media activity as a mandatory data element in the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). In plain language: Anyone who is active on platforms such as X, Facebook, or Instagram, for example, will have to disclose their activity over the last five years if they want to enter the US via the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) with an ESTA application. The plans have caused quite a stir and created a lot of uncertainty. We shed some light on the situation: What applies now and what will apply in the future?


Hand luggage checks at airports are often time-consuming. Each passenger must present liquids separately, unpack electronic devices, and remove metal objects. Even minor ambiguities on the X-ray image mean that the piece of luggage has to be meticulously checked. Frankfurt am Main (Fraport) is now the first airport in Europe to use innovative software in regular operation that uses artificial intelligence to detect items that are prohibited in hand luggage: the Automated Prohibited Item Detection System (APIDS).


 
For travelers from non-Schengen countries, Germany has started introducing a digital registration system this fall: the Entry/Exit System (EES), which replaces the previous stamping of travel documents.


 
2026 is going to be a super trade fair year for Düsseldorf. In addition to annual events like boot, Caravansalon, and Medica, four leading trade fairs that only take place every couple of years will open their doors in the state capital next year: Euroshop will kick things off in February.
