Düsseldorf will see a major sports event this year: The “Grand Départ” of the “Tour de France 2017”, the world’s most prestigious bicycle race. The tour start has taken place in Germany before: Cologne (1965), Frankfurt (1980) and Berlin (1987) were host cities in the past.

On Thursday, June 29th, the participating teams are presented In Düsseldorf. The Grand Départ kicks off on July 1st with the 13 km individual time trial. The second stage also starts in Duesseldorf; it is scheduled for July 2nd. Stage two has a length of 200 kilometres and leads to Liège in Belgium. All in all the cyclists have to overcome a distance of more than 3.500 kilometres before they hit the home stretch, the Champs-Elysees in Paris, on July 23rd.

There are also several fringe events in Duesseldorf: On June 29th the illuminated Benrath Castle is the venue of the “Festival of Lights”, with fireworks and classical music. On July 1st there is another highlight: The “Kraftwerk” open Air Concert in Ehrenhof.
