The Charlemagne-Prize 2019 goes to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres. The award honors exceptional work performed in the service of European unity and is given to public figures distinguished by their outstanding work toward European unity or cooperation between its states.
Since 2017 definitive responsibility for the work of the United Nations rests in the hands of the former Prime Minister of Portugal, António Guterres. He acts, on the basis of the common values and convictions of the European Union, in the complex global world to promote liberty, tolerance, dialogue, peace and democracy.
